An article by David Reid, featured in A Burnage Miscellany 4 from Burnage Heritage, was the focal point of today’s session. Using the National Library of Scotland’s digitised 1848 Ordnance Survey map of the area, we journeyed from Didsbury Road to cross the Nico Ditch over Slade Lane, our route both following and diverging away from the present alignment of Burnage Lane.
Mention is made of field systems, boundary stones, elevation changes, and how 14th century jurors describe Burnage Lane being ‘removed from its ancient line’; all adding to this wonderfully thought provoking account. The superb digital maps allow every detail to be clearly displayed, giving us an invaluable record of the landscape before the developments of the late 19th and 20th century.
Why not come along next week and share your thoughts?
